AMG EQE53

"A new generation, well ahead of its time: the new Mercedes-AMG EQE models drive sustainability into the fast lane. Electric. Dynamic. AMG" - Mercedes

The AMG EQE 53 is priced at around £109,000 and is typically an enhanced version of the standard car. The standard vehicle was a big spacious saloon that was missing some oomph, however, when AMG got a hold of it, they made sure to give it quite a lot of power.

How does this electric vehicle compare to the petrol version?

The previous e53 AMG had a petrol engine making 435 horsepower. this EQE 53 has two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back, making 476 horsepower each. The EQE is heavy weighing in at 2.6 tonnes. Being such a heavy car means the motors are forced to work even harder. A specific inverter, adapted windings and laminations, and higher currents in the motors make this possible. However, for full acceleration, you will have to spend an extra £4,000 + TAX for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.

The AMG EQE 53 has a big battery of 90.6-kilowatt hours usable capacity it’s the same as you get in the standard car but with an AMG-specific wiring harness to handle the extra power. In the regular model, this delivers up to 394 miles but with AMG’s alternate tuning range drops to as low as 285. The EQE53 will recharge at 270 kilowatts which is quick enough to add over 100 miles of extra range in under 20 minutes.

An innovative electric vehicle battery

The base option gives you 626bhp/700lb-ft of torque, goes 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, and has a 137mph top speed. AMG Dynamic Plus pack option gives you 687bhp/738lb-ft, dropping the 0-62mph time to 3.3 seconds and upping the top speed to just under 150mph.

So, while it may not look like a monster of a vehicle, it certainly is. 1000 newton meters off launch is an absurd amount, thankfully you can limit the amount of torque the car delivers. In ‘Comfort’ power is limited to 80%, ‘Sports’ 90%, and only in ‘Sports Plus’ will you get the full 100%. From a launch though the motors can crack up to 110% for a maximum of 686 horsepower during launch control. After launch, it settles down slightly, when in ‘sports’ mode the torque drops to a steady 885-newton meter.

An electric vehicle with sound

All this power but no soul? Of course, there is no roar of an engine when launching this EV, however, AMG has done something about that. The AMG Sound Experience adds artificial noise from the speaker to compensate for the engine. You can change the sound modes to suit your diving experience.
