The Mercedes Vision EQXX

"The new benchmark of efficiency" - Mercedes

The EQXX is still a concept electric vehicle, however, it has been tested and no other electric vehicle has driven as far as this vehicle has on a singular charge. Clocking up 1202.0km with an average energy consumption of just 8.3 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometres travelled.

The most aerodynamic electric vehicle from Mercedes

The key thing about Mercedes EQXX is its design, it’s all about being as aerodynamic as possible. This electric vehicle has a long tail that can be extended further with a dispensable spoiler. Unlike many spoilers that create downforce, the EQXX spoiler helps minimise drag. The aerodynamic efficiency of this electric vehicle is impressive, it has a drag coefficient of 0.17 cd. The rear end of this electric vehicle is 50 millimetres narrower than the front. This helps keep the wheels in a certain position so that the spokes aren’t exposed to reduce drag. The wheels are made from magnesium so they’re lightweight. Furthermore, the brake disks are made from aluminium to help reduce weight as well. Many EVs like the Audi e-Tron and Polestar have opted for cameras instead of door mirrors to reduce drag, the EQXX has regular door mirrors that are slightly smaller than the usual ones.

An innovative electric vehicle battery

There are breathers along the side and front to reduce drag and a vent to cool the motors. What you will find interesting is at the front there are no vents to cool the battery only the motors. The reason for this is that Mercedes have found a new technique to cool the battery. There are aluminium plates underneath the car which conduct the heat away from the battery pack, air rushes over those plates and then cools the battery pack down.

The EQXX has a very innovative battery built with the help of the Mercedes formula one team. The battery has 100 kW hours of capacity (the same as the EQS). The volume of the EQXX battery is half the size of the EQS’s and weighs 30% less at 495kg as opposed to 650kg. As well as being lightweight it is very efficient. A normal electric car would use 90% of its battery capacity for propulsion and the remaining 10% for ancillary stuff, such as the SAT NAV and AC. Everything about the EQXX is so efficient that 95% of the battery’s power can be used for propulsion and only 5% for other essentials. Power goes to a single rear-mounted motor which puts out 244hp resulting in a top speed of 140 kilometres an hour.

Lightweight electric vehicle

Electric cars are really big and heavy because of their huge batteries. Despite the fact that the EQXX has a big battery it weighs only 1,750 kg. This weight is fairly light for an electric vehicle, especially one with such an impressive range. One of the ways Mercedes have kept the weight down is how they built the supporting structure for the car. Rather than being built up of 80 pieces of metal as it would normally be, Mercedes has used an organic structure. The shape of this has been worked out by using computer game engine technology and then 3D printed to form the metal structure. Mercedes have used this method for several components in this electric vehicle all helping to reduce the weight load of the vehicle and increase efficiency.
