The Ioniq 6

"IONIQ 6 connects an emotional convergence of functionality with aesthetics. " - SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center

In 2021 Hyundai Released the Ioniq 5, making an electric crossover like no other.

This year they have turned heads once again with their latest saloon electric vehicle the Ioniq 6.

The Ioniq 6 is based on Hyundai’s ‘prophecy concept’ a sports coupe. However, the Ioniq 6 resembles more of a sedan/saloon or as Hyundai describes it, an ‘Electrified Streamliner’.

A new typology for the EV Mobility era

Hyundai is calling the IONIQ 6 an electrified streamliner, Hyundai describes it as an electric vehicle that understands the idea of emotional efficiency by meeting the aesthetic and functional needs of their customers. Hyundai says the aerodynamically crafted silhouette with its simple yet sensuous curves brings forward a new typology for the EV mobility era.

A design like no other electric vehicles

The Ioniq 6 looks like no other electric vehicle on the market whilst that may not be appealing for some. However, it does share some features with its family vehicle the Ioniq 5.

The front design is very sleek and simplistic. Black bars along the top and bottom edge of the bumper hide some of this EV’s various sensors. Electronically deployed vents that open and close to help cool the battery and motors whilst contributing to the sleek front design.

The design of the side of this electric vehicle gives us an understanding of why Hyundai is calling the Inoiq 6 an ‘electrified streamliner’. The roof line swoops down aggressively at the rear like that of some vehicles from the 1930-1940’s for example the Tatra 87. The side doesn’t have the slashes and cuts you find in the Ioniq 5 that we like so much, however, it’s by far more smoother and sleeker.

The Ioniq 6 has 20inch wheels with a large wheelbase of 2.95 metres nearly the same as some small SUV’s. With a lot of electric vehicles adopting electric cameras as an alternative for mirrors Hyundai has done it a little. Making the cameras on the side translucent and featuring the brands signature pixels.

Speaking of pixels, Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 offers a unique user experience. Evolving and integrating the brand’s signature Parametric Pixel design in over 700 places. Pixels in the rear combination lamps and headlights, reinforce the IONIQ brand’s identity throughout this electric vehicle.

The back is the most interesting part of this electric vehicle whilst still maintaining that overall sleek design. Hosting most of the pixel lights the back of the vehicle is unique and stands out amongst other electric vehicles. Two rear spoilers, one on top of the boot lid and another with an acrylic glass effect lit with more pixels. When turning the vehicle on and off the pixels will do an animation that you might find quite absorbing.

Is the inside of this electric vehicle as fascinating as the outside?

Hyundai describe the interior of this EV as a Cocoon-inspired interior accommodating a mindful personal space on wheels.

IONIQ 6’s cocoon-shaped interior intends to serve as a comfortable hideaway and personal space simultaneously. Well fitted with practical features and sustainable materials the vehicle helps facilitate a mindful, eco-friendly mobility experience and lifestyle.

In fact, the Ioniq 6 has all the features you would expect of a car built by a manufacture aiming for sustainability. Fishing nets instead of floor mats, recycled PET and more.

Unlike the Ioniq 5 the Ioniq 6 has a fixed centre console instead of the floating centre console. The centre console comes with a wireless charging compartment, usb ports and control over all the doors and windows. You may be more familiar with the controls for the doors/windows being on the door. Hyundai has opted to take a different approach introducing them to the centre console.

Hyundai has replaced the space you would usually find the controls for the windows/doors with speakers and ambient lighting. Customizable dual colour ambient lighting gives an overall illuminating experience in the IONIQ 6. Users can choose from a wide spectrum of over 60 colours and 6 dual colour themes developed by colour experts to help drivers as well as passengers feel relaxed and comfortable.

Whilst the technology is similar to the Ioniq 5. The infotainment screen in the Ioniq 6 looks more premium with its silver trimming along the edging. Interestingly the steering wheel does not feature Hyundai’s logo but instead they have replaced it with for led pixels. The led pixels on the steering wheel will indicate the level of charge in the vehicle and when the vehicle has initiated charging.

Hyundai is yet to release the core specifications of this electric vehicle. However, the car will be based on the same platform as the ioniq 5 so that may give you an idea on what to expect.
