The Kia EV6

"Designed to inspire" - Kia

The competition to build the best family EV is high. In fact, for some Kia’s fully electric crossover vehicle is regarded as the best electric vehicle ever. The EV6 has won the “Car of the Year” award at the 2022 What Car? Awards, alongside being named “Electric SUV of the Year”. However, is it the electric vehicle for you?

What makes this EV the best?

One of the main reasons this electric vehicle is considered so impressive compared to its rivals is the interior. The backseats have more than enough legroom whilst headroom isn’t quite as generous, but you shouldn’t experience any issues unless you are well over 6ft, especially with the option to recline your seat slightly. The back of the EV6 has a wide interior with a flat floor making it easy to seat 3 passengers. Conveniently, at the feet of the middle seat, you will find a 3-pin plug. The middle seat folds down revealing a hatch that allows you easy access to the boot. In comparison to the Tesla Model 3, the EV6 is bigger on the inside, and for the money, you will struggle to find a vehicle with as much room in the back as the EV6.

The interior space isn’t the only thing that makes the EV6 a good vehicle. As standard, you will get comfortable heated front seats, with adjustable lumbar support for the driver. If you opt for the GT line version of the EV6 the passenger seat will also come with adjustable lumbar support. The GT Line will also allow you to adjust the seats electronically and recline the seats back fully.

The EV6 comes with a touch panel allowing you to control heating and some other features, rather than having to experience the difficulty of trying to access the sub-menu in the infotainment. Whilst a physical touch panel is easier to use on the move this system does work well. As well as climate control, the touch panel allows you to add some shortcuts for the infotainment system.

As standard, the EV6 comes with two conjoined 12.3inch screens to make up the infotainment system. The infotainment is located high on the dashboard not taking your eyes too far from the road to look at it. It is fairly responsive and is a great improvement to Kia’s infotainment systems in previous vehicles. The infotainment system has a simple layout and isn’t difficult to navigate and comes with both Android Auto and Apple Car Play as standard.

Different versions of the EV6 come with some more additional tech features for example.

  • The GT line comes with a wireless charging station under the centre console.
  • The GT line S swaps out the standard 6-speaker setup for a 14-speaker setup

In the entry-level Air Spec EV6, you get a rear parking sensor and reversing camera, if you go up to the GT line it adds additional front parking sensors. The GT Line S adds a 360-degree bird’s eye view camera as well as all the other sensors/cameras.

Considering how big and roomy the EV6 is the boot space isn’t all that impressive coming in at 490 litres. Accessing the boot is easy with the opening being high and wide making the vehicle easy to load. Unfortunately, you will only get an automatic tailgate if you opt for the GT Line S. Ultimately you will get more boot space in the Skoda Enyaq or Tesla model 3.

Range, Performance, and charging capabilities of this EV

EV6 RWD:

  • 226bhp
  • 0-62mph in 7.3sec
  • Up to 328 miles in range WLTP
  • Top speed of 114mph

EV6 AWD:

  • 321bhp
  • 0-62mph in 5.2sec
  • Up to 314 miles in range WLTP
  • Top speed of 114mph

Driving this electric vehicle feels well-controlled and firm. As a result, it grips well through corners, there’s not much body leaning, and the steering is accurate. This Electric vehicle is also very quiet with there being hardly any motor whine, suspension, road, or wind noise.

When it comes to charging no matter what EV6 you go for, as standard you will get superfast charging. So, you will be able to charge at rates of up to 235 kilowatts which can get you from 10%-80% in 18 minutes. However, there aren’t many chargers capable of delivering this speed of charging. It is more likely that you will be using 50-100kw chargers. On the lower scale, 50-100kw chargers will charge your electric vehicle in 70 minutes.
